An alternative to MAT 096 for students who are highly motivated, goal oriented and able to independently move through the course material. Students set their own deadlines; instructor assistance is available during class and Math Studio time. Students use an online homework system both in and out of class. This course develops algebra skills and a conceptual understanding of algebraic topics, and focuses on the relationship between algebraic, graphical, and numeric approaches to solving problems. Students study topics that include linear equations and systems of equations, methods for solving problems, radicals and radical equations, quadratic equations and the quadratic formula, rational exponents and rational expressions. The course places emphasis on graphing in the Cartesian coordinate system with particular stress on graphing linear equations and systems of equations. Students work at times with calculators and/or computers.
NOTE: This course may not be used to fulfill degree or certificate requirements. A grade of C minus or higher is required to pass this course (Ds are not awarded)
Special Requirement: Restricted to students who have started and completed MAT 095S in the current semester by the last day to drop/withdraw with "No Record" and have shown the ability to finish MAT 096S prior to the end of the current semester. Students need access to high-speed internet for homework.
Prereq: MAT 095S completed in the current semester,
ENG 090 or
satisfactory placement,
ENG 094 or satisfactory placement,
and permission of MAT 095S instructor.
